When Ben, a skilled furniture maker known for his craftsmanship, recently put Mirka tools through their paces, he was struck by how much easier and more enjoyable sanding could be.
He explained that while his process is varied, he still relies heavily on sanders to complete his work. What stood out to him was not just the performance of the machines but also how light, comfortable, and versatile they felt in hand.
Hands-On with the Mirka Range
During his demo, Ben had the chance to test a wide variety of Mirka tools and abrasives. Here’s what he found:
Mirka Deros II 150mm Random Orbital Sander (5mm Orbit) – Light, powerful, and comfortable to use, this sander quickly became Ben’s go-to.
“It’s really light, easy to use, and creates a beautiful finish without that tingly feeling you get after sanding for a long time.”
Ben was so impressed, he purchased one soon after the demo.
Mirka Deros II 77mm Random Orbital Sander (5mm Orbit) – Compact but effective, perfect for detail work.
“It’s kind of underrated because it’s so small—but it’s great for intricate projects. Really nice to use.”
Mirka Deros II 175mm Random Orbital Sander – Ideal for big panels and tabletops thanks to its wide sanding surface.
“I was using this on a big large panel and could tell that it would take far less time with a disc this large. I didn't need to overlap my sanding pattern as much, and I was getting nice really even coverage and then looking at the finish, there were absolutely no spirals.”
Mirka DEOS II 353CV (81x133mm, 3mm Orbit) – A compact direct electric orbital sander built for precision.
“It was really even more useful when it came to large radius exterior surfaces. With the interface pad, it made it really smooth, perfect for a lot of furniture restoration applications, getting up into the corners of things.”
Mirka Deros RS 600 Rotary Sander – A serious workhorse, powerful yet smooth.
“It tore through a dense Australian hardwood stump in just a couple of minutes. For something so powerful, it’s surprisingly light and easy to use. The dust extraction is phenomenal, it’s brushless so there’s no gears or brushes to worry about, and with the Abranet HD discs it made short work of some really tough timbers. Extremely impressive—this one’s a beast.”
Mirka AROS-B 32mm Cordless Sander – A cordless spot sander designed for fine detail work.
“Ergonomic and really enjoyable to use. Having such a tiny head is perfect for getting into bowls, tight spots, or doing little spot repairs. It’s the kind of tool that makes detailed work so much easier.”
Mirka Angos Rotary Grinder – Versatile with quick-change Roloc fittings.
“Surprisingly light and a pleasure to use. The Roloc system makes swapping attachments effortless, and with the Abranet flap disc it was brilliant for tight curves and detail sanding.”
Abrasives That Made the Difference
The tools weren’t the only standouts—Ben also appreciated Mirka’s abrasives.
Ultimax Ligno – Designed specifically for timber, the unique channel pattern helps clear dust efficiently, keeping the abrasive cutting sharper for longer.
Abranet Ace – A tougher net abrasive that holds up under heavy sanding, offering excellent stock removal while maintaining a consistent finish.
Together, these gave Ben the flexibility to move from flat panels to concave chair seats, rounded table legs, and other tricky shapes—all while maintaining a smooth, even finish.
